Foodie Friday: State Fair Food ~ Recipes & More

{ Via Elle Decor }

The Illinois State Fair opened yesterday, and perhaps in your home state, too. I have many fond memories of the yearly road trip to Springfield during our horse racing days. Any state fair is a whole different world for city slickers like myself. And it's much more than hog calling and sheep shearing. It's a junk food haven! So if you are a healthy eater, either stay home or throw caution and calories to the wind!

HERE: 17 Fair Worthy Recipes

Fried Chicken And Waffle Sandwiches
This is for Mr. Shop This. The recipe includes instructions for Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Bacon, Cheddar, and Green Onion Waffles and Maple Mustard Sauce.
The Candid Appetite

Maple Chocolate Bacon Skewers
Said to be ridiculously and dangerously easy to make. The hardest part is waiting for the chocolate to set before you take a bite!
Framed Cooks

Mini Jalapeno Corn Dogs
For many, a corn dog is a Summer staple. It brings back memories of Coney Island, carnivals and the State Fair. This recipe makes for a fun Summer party starter.
Boulder Locavore

State Fair Cream Puffs
Adapted from the Wisconsin Baker's Association, these pretty puffs are approachable with step by step images. And I am sure that you won't mind that the filling is more boozy than chocolately. I want one now!

 Blooming Onion
This was one of my very favorite foods at the Fair. If you like onion rings, you'll love these. The dipping sauce is the best.
A Beautiful Mess

S'more Funnel Cake Fries
Sinful and most likely sensational!
Buzzfeed

Deep Fried Spaghetti and Meatballs ... on a Stick!
Straight from the Minnesota State Fair. It leaves you wondering if the laws of physics applies to this recipe.
 Bon Appetit

Texas State Fair Pecan Pie
This is the one dish that I could never resist. I have made this recipe before. It's perfect and extraordinarily sweet and rich. Winner of the 1996 Texas State Fair pie competition.
Food And Wine

Spicy Corn On The Cob
If you see fresh corn on the cob at the Fair, try it. Chances are it is straight from the farm and so much better that you get at your local market. This simple recipe steps it up a bit.
Country Living

Baked Deep Fried Oreos
These will hit the spot when you need something warm and gooey that melts in your mouth!
Something Swanky

Deep-Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Recipe
Yes, it seems that at any state fair they will fry almost anything. I have to say, this recipe actually sounds good to me, especially the white chocolate ganache!

Honey BBQ Pulled Pork Burgers
And this is what I always ate at The Illinois State Fair. The same barbecue boys were there every year. Their sandwich looked something like this. Just yum!
What's Gabby Cooking

Grandmother Lucy's Raspberry Lattice Pie
Jeffrey Doyle-Horney won $8,000 plus in prizes for this juicy pie at the Wisconsin State fair in 2013. No matter what it tastes like, it gets my prize for the look of the crust alone!

Panko Fried Dill Pickle Chips
If you haven't had a fried pickle yet, you are missing out.  The Panko breading will add a lighter touch. The Blue Cheese Dipping Sauce sends this recipe over the top.
Spoon Fork Bacon

Spiked Cotton Candy
Could anything be more appealing and so bad for us? I have to admit I love this spun sugar confection, but haven't had it since a great night in Hollywood many moons ago. The good news is that recipe can be made with sugar free candy. There's a saving grace. The spiking is done with vodka. Here's a great little Cotton Candy Machine at Amazon. Recipe can be found at
Sugar & Cloth

Mac and Cheese Stuffed Fried Zucchini
I've seen fried Mac & Cheese Bites at fairs, and Fried Zucchini, but not together. Sounds like a great way to use all of the Summer zucchini.
Half Baked Harvest

Orange Buttermilk Chess Pie
Inspired by Denise Sa Ade's winning pie at the 2013 state fair of Texas. My Grandmother Pearl always made a Chess Pie. You may have to be from the South to know what it is. This recipe is a bit fancier. Looks fab!
Country Living

Salty Road Salt Water Taffy
Another one of my favorite past times at The State Fair is watching them pull taffy. All of that sugar and stretching is mesmerizing, but it is so much work.  Instead, treat yourself to something more special than the average fair sweet. That would be Marisa Wu’s Taffy made in her very own Brooklyn candy factory & sold at
